Perceptions


Receiving feedback has always been a mixed experience for me. Feedback, for me, is like standing in front of a mirror where my flaws and strengths are reflected in me. It was like a delicate dance, a tango between my desire for growth and my fear of imperfection, a constant push and pull between vulnerability and defensiveness. On one hand, it offers valuable insights and perspectives that can aid personal and professional growth. On the other hand, it can be uncomfortable and sometimes challenging to hear criticism or areas for improvement. Initially, I used to feel defensive or even discouraged when receiving feedback, especially if it pointed out flaws or mistakes in my work. The words of feedback can feel like physical jabs, poking and prodding at my self-esteem and confidence.


To improve my reaction to feedback, I have I have actively worked on cultivating a growth mindset. It was like a garden of self-reflection and self-discovery, where each new insight and perspective was a blooming flower, adding depth and color to my personal and professional growth. And with each new batch of feedback, I was able to nurture and tend to this garden, continuously growing and evolving into a better version of myself. Instead of viewing feedback as a critique of my abilities, I now see it as an opportunity for development. This shift in perspective has helped me approach feedback with openness and curiosity rather than defensiveness. Additionally, I remind myself that receiving feedback is a natural part of the learning process and an essential step toward improvement. As I embrace the concept of a growth mindset, it feels like wearing a suit of armor that protects me from the harsh words of feedback. But this armor is not rigid and unyielding; it is flexible and allows me to adjust and adapt as needed.


Past Feedback


The image of past feedback flashes in my mind, a montage of faces, expressions, and words. Some were stern and serious; others were kind and encouraging. I see myself sitting in different chairs, facing different people, all with one goal in mind: growth. Past feedback has been instrumental in shaping how I give and receive feedback today. Through various experiences, I have learned the importance of active listening and being empathic when providing feedback. I have also realized the value of specificity and constructive criticism in making feedback actionable and meaningful. Moreover, reflecting on past feedback has helped me identify recurring patterns or areas for improvement, allowing me to be more proactive in addressing them.

Each face has a unique expression, reflecting their cultural background and experiences. In an eclectic setting, people of different races, genders, and cultural backgrounds come together, each with their unique physical appearances, clothing, and mannerisms. Above all, it needs a constant pursuit of knowledge on diversity issues to expand one's cultural competence. By incorporating these strategies into feedback processes, we can ignite true collaboration, nurture mutual respect, and foster a thriving culture of inclusivity that champions diversity.


Feedback is the fuel that propels us forward on our journey of growth and understanding. Its impact is profound, especially within diverse groups.
